Thermal imaging as a tool for studying circadian rhythms in roots

Plant J 2026 Jul;127(1):e70992. doi: 10.1111/tpj.70992

This study introduces thermal imaging as a non-invasive way to measure circadian rhythms in plant roots. It shows that root clocks are robust and responsive to factors such as sucrose, microbes and water status, offering a new tool to study below-ground circadian regulation.

The importance of the circadian system for adaptation to heat wave stress in wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum)

Environ Exp Bot 2023 Feb;206:105152. doi: 10.1016/j.envexpbot.2022.105152

Acute heat stress alters circadian rhythms in wild barley, shortening circadian period and reducing rhythm amplitude. Accessions with greater circadian plasticity under heat stress tended to maintain higher plant vitality, suggesting that flexibility of the circadian system contributes to heat-wave resilience.

Thermal imaging as a non-invasive technique for analyzing circadian rhythms in plants

New Phytol 2019 Dec;224(4):1685–1696. doi: 10.1111/nph.16124

Thermal imaging offers a non-invasive, high-resolution way to measure plant circadian rhythms through changes in surface temperature. It works across different species and circadian mutants and can reveal subtle timing features such as dawn anticipation.

PHYTOCHROME INTERACTING FACTOR (PIF)-mediated sucrose regulation of the circadian oscillator is light quality and temperature dependent

Genes 2018 Dec;9(12):628. doi: 10.3390/genes9120628

PIF transcription factors help convey sucrose signals to the Arabidopsis circadian clock, linking metabolism with circadian timing. This regulation depends strongly on light quality and temperature, with red and blue light having opposing effects

CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED1 (CCA1) and the circadian control of stomatal aperture

Plant Physiol 2017 Dec;175(4):1864–1877. doi: 10.1104/pp.17.01214

The circadian clock helps control daily changes in stomatal opening, with CCA1 playing an important role in guard cells. The guard-cell clock has distinct features from the rest of the leaf and links circadian timing to pathways that regulate stomatal aperture.

Correlations between circadian rhythms and growth in challenging environments

Plant Physiol 2017 Mar;173(3):1724–1734. doi: 10.1104/pp.17.00057

Wild barley accessions from different environments show substantial natural variation in circadian rhythms. Circadian period and amplitude correlate with environmental conditions at their sites of origin, suggesting that circadian traits contribute to local adaptation and growth in challenging environments.

PHYTOCHROME INTERACTING FACTORS mediate metabolic control of the plant circadian system

New Phytol 2017 Jul;215(1):217–228. doi: 10.1111/nph.14579

PIF transcription factors link metabolic signals from photosynthesis to the Arabidopsis circadian clock. Sucrose alters PIF activity and promotes their binding to key clock genes such as CCA1 and LHY, thereby influencing circadian timing.
